Petrol vs Electric

Electric vs Petrol: How do they compare?

The practical differences that matter for Pakistani drivers.

Calculate with your own numbers
Electric vs Petrol: How do they compare?
Factor Petrol vehicle Electric vehicle
Energy cost Pay per litre at the pump; rises with global oil prices Pay per kWh of electricity, usually far less per KM, especially when charged at home
Maintenance Oil changes, filters, spark plugs, clutch and exhaust parts No engine oil or exhaust; fewer moving parts and less brake wear thanks to regenerative braking
Refuelling / charging A few minutes at any fuel station Overnight at home, or faster at public DC chargers
Noise & emissions Engine noise and tailpipe emissions Quiet, with zero tailpipe emissions
Upfront price Usually lower Usually higher, offset over time by lower running costs
Long-term consideration Engine wear over time Battery health over time; check warranty terms

Charging

Charging an EV in Pakistan

Most EV owners charge at home overnight and use public chargers for longer trips.

Find charging stations

Home charging (AC)

A regular socket or a wall-mounted charger. The slowest option, but the cheapest and most convenient: charge overnight at your home electricity tariff.

Public fast charging (DC)

DC fast chargers can add a large share of range in well under an hour. Public charging stations charge per unit at their own tariff.

Charging cost formula

Cost of a full charge ≈ usable battery size (kWh) × price per unit ÷ charging efficiency. Our calculator does this for you.

Safe charging at home

Use proper earthing, a correctly rated circuit and the charger supplied by the manufacturer. Ask a qualified electrician to check your wiring.

Why switch?

Why switch to electric?

Reasons more Pakistani drivers and riders are choosing EVs.

Lower running cost

Electricity usually costs much less per KM than petrol, and home charging is the cheapest of all.

Less maintenance

No oil changes, spark plugs or exhaust repairs. Fewer moving parts means fewer things to fix.

Cleaner cities

Zero tailpipe emissions help reduce smog and air pollution in cities like Lahore and Karachi.

Instant performance

Electric motors deliver full torque instantly for smooth, quiet acceleration in traffic.

Charge at home

Wake up to a full battery every morning instead of queueing at the pump.

Less exposure to fuel prices

Your running cost depends far less on fortnightly petrol price changes.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers to the questions Pakistanis ask most about electric vehicles.

Try the calculator

How much does an electric bike cost per KM in Pakistan?

Multiply the bike’s energy use per KM by your electricity price per unit. Most electric motorcycles and scooters use a small fraction of a unit per KM, so the cost per KM is usually far below a petrol bike’s. Enter your bike’s consumption and your tariff in the PakeWheels calculator to get your exact figure.

Is an electric car cheaper than a petrol car in Pakistan?

To run, usually yes: home charging typically costs much less per KM than petrol. To buy, electric cars generally cost more upfront. Whether an EV is cheaper overall depends on how far you drive, your electricity tariff and how long you keep the car — the calculator’s ownership comparison and break-even estimate answer this for your situation.

How much electricity does an EV use?

EV consumption is measured in kWh per 100 KM. Electric cars generally use more than electric motorcycles and scooters, and real-world use varies with speed, traffic, air-conditioning, load and weather. Check the manufacturer’s figure and real-world owner reports, then add a margin for charging losses.

What is the charging cost of an electric car?

Charging cost = energy added to the battery (kWh) × price per unit, plus charging losses. Home charging uses your residential tariff; public charging stations charge their own per-unit rate, which is usually higher. PakeWheels shows the latest admin-verified tariffs with their dates and sources.

How long does it take to charge an EV?

It depends on the battery size and the charger. Home AC charging can take several hours and is usually done overnight. DC fast chargers at public stations are much quicker. Motorcycles and scooters with small batteries typically charge in a few hours from a normal socket.

How long do EV batteries last?

Most manufacturers offer a separate, longer warranty on the battery than on the rest of the vehicle. Battery capacity reduces gradually with age and use. Avoiding frequent 100% charges and extreme heat helps it last longer — important in Pakistan’s summers.

Can I charge an electric vehicle at home in Pakistan?

Yes. Many electric motorcycles and scooters charge from a standard household socket, while electric cars are best charged with a dedicated wall charger. Have a qualified electrician check your wiring, earthing and sanctioned load before installing one.

How much can I save by switching to an electric vehicle?

Your saving is the difference between your fuel cost per KM and your electricity cost per KM, multiplied by the distance you drive. Daily commuters and delivery riders who cover more KM save the most. Use the free PakeWheels calculator to see your monthly and yearly savings.

EV guide

Electric Vehicles in Pakistan: A Quick Guide

Is an electric vehicle cheaper to run than a petrol vehicle in Pakistan?

In most cases, yes. An EV’s cost per KM is its energy use (kWh per KM) multiplied by your electricity price, while a petrol vehicle’s cost per KM is the petrol price divided by its fuel average (KM per litre). For typical cars and motorcycles, charging at home costs a fraction of petrol per KM. The exact saving depends on your tariff, your vehicle and how far you drive — use the PakeWheels calculator with your own numbers.

How do I calculate EV charging cost?

Multiply the energy you put into the battery (kWh) by the price per unit, then add charging losses (usually a few percent to around 15%). For cost per KM, divide the vehicle’s consumption in kWh per 100 KM by 100 and multiply by the price per unit.

What types of electric vehicles are available in Pakistan?

Pakistan’s EV market includes electric cars, plug-in hybrids, electric motorcycles and scooters, electric bicycles, electric rickshaws and loaders, and a growing number of commercial vehicles such as electric buses and vans.

What should I check before buying a used EV?

Check battery health (state of health), remaining battery warranty, real-world range, charging port condition, service history and registration documents. On PakeWheels listings, sellers can add battery and range details to help you compare.
